Dr Emma Richards has 18 years of experience, graduating from Cambridge Medical School in 2006, having previously gained a First-Class degree at Birmingham University in Biomedical Science. Her hospital training included working in Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General Medicine and General Surgery as well as several Accident and Emergency departments. During her GP training, she gained experience in Respiratory Medicine, Dermatology and Psychiatry with additional diplomas in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Reproductive and Sexual health, providing an excellent grounding for her special interest in women’s health and menopause. She worked as a GP within the NHS for 10 years before joining Hove practice and is passionate about fully understanding and connecting with patients to formulate the best solution for them as an individual. This particular interest in personalised medicine has led Dr Richards to undertake a part-time Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Genomics at St Georges and City University, London.
Dr Richards was selected to become an Honorary Research Fellow at Imperial College for a year, undertaking Primary Care Research and teaching medical students. She has published several articles in well-known medical journals, including the BMJ and BJGP and has presented at Academic Primary Care Conferences in Oxford and Cambridge. She was awarded the annual Learning and Development Prize by the London Deanery, and a Teaching Hero award by her students.
Prior to GP training, in search of warmer climes, she volunteered in Ghana with the charity Doctors Worldwide before moving to Australia to work in the Emergency Department of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, giving her an understanding of tropical, acute and emergency medicine and an appreciation of different medical systems.
Eventually the draw of family and friends brought Dr Richards back to the UK, taking up her first GP jobs in London, but later moving to Hertfordshire then Horsham in 2021, where she now lives with her husband and three children.
Outside work she can be found working on her Genomics diploma, chasing around after her children, trying to fit in a quick 5k run, playing the piano and doing mountains of laundry.
